The comp was really well run and a lot of fun. It was a shock to see how many strong people had turned up!

After returing from europe i needed to get back into plastic. i had a quick session at the works on their new dirty yellow circuit. Gaz told me "it will make you cry" and he wasn't far wrong. Most of the problems are hard and use minging little crimps. I felt pretty psyched to be climbing on plastic again (strange but true) and felt pretty strong, doing most the probems in a session. I left feeling really beaten with really sore skin, but feeling like i was in tune wth plastic again just in time for the comp.

After arriving at the comp on Sunday and warming up we got stuck in to the qualifyers. They were all pretty hard with loads of the problems being dropable due to bad foot holds. I was pretty nervous - i find it hard to climb well with the pressure of having to flash the problems. In the end I managed to do 9 of the 10 problems, qualifying in 2nd place behind Gaz. I was really happy to have made the final and wasn't really bothered with how well i would do as the worst i could do was come 8th and this would have been my best result in the BBCs yet.

After watching the womens final we headed into isolation and began the warm up again. I was out second last after all the others so could take my time and warm up fully.

The first problem suited me totally. An easy lay back led to big moves on pockets and dishes and a tricky move at the end. I dropped the last move on my first go (just funbled the finishing pocket) but did it next go.

The second and third problems were not too hard but they took me a few goes to figure out and do. Luckily they were not very long so i didn't get too tired despite having a lot of goes.
The 4th problem was dirty hard and i got shut down. Luckly so did everyone else ( a couple got very close). I limited my goes on this in order to save some beans for the last problem.

The last problem was easy all the way to the last move which used a tricky foot lock. It seems that most people didn't find the foot lock and couldnt hold the last hold. On my first go i saw what to do but got too pupmed getting there and couldn't make the foot lock work. I knew i could do the problem so i decided to take maximum rest and give it one more go. This time i pulled on and sprinted to the last move. I got there feeling pretty fresh compared to the previous go and had time to make the footlock work, and stick the last hold.

I was pretty pleased to have done 4 of the 5 poblems but presumed a lot of the others would have as well. As i went to sit down and chill Gangle ran up to me and told me i had won. I didn't belive him but then more and more people kept running over and congratulating me! Nice! It turns out that i am the youngest winner yet which is pretty cool, even if it does feel a bit like i won it by accident!

I had decided before the comp that i would be happy to make the finals, even if i came last in the final. After qualifying in 2nd place, i was really chuffed and not at all bothered how well i would do in the final. I think this stopped me from putting too much pressuere on myself which really helped.

Overall the comp was really good fun. It was good to see all the usual comp faces as well as some additional beasts, and it is always nice to feel like you are climbing well.

euro trip

After my exams finished I headed off to Europe with the Masonator and the gangly Tom Newman.

First was magic – Dave and Tom crushed while I battled to keep up, but still got some cool problems ticked.
We then went to Fionnay (an area Dave Graham developed) which has a cool cave with loads of horizontal problems on amazing granite. We all got some problems done – especially gangle who was dispatching left right and centre despite being injured!

I then had a comp in Montauban (one of the last rounds of this years world cup) so we drove down to meet the others. Gaz was taken ill and had to go to hospital and get scanned and fed some funky drugs. He didn’t get to compete in the end which sucked a bit.

I managed to do ok and surprised myself (and probably the others) a bit by coming 23rd overall. I was close to getting into the semis which would have been really good fun, but I was pretty pleased to not come at the bottom of the field for the first time! The party afterwards was ok but the band sucked and they ran out of beer (probably because team austria (Fishuber and Lama) had got to it first judging by the state of them!)

After this we drove up to font to chill for a while before heading home. I had so much fun pottering about on easy stuff with a bit of carpet feeling all old school (but without the woolly jumper and high trousers), but also got stuck into a couple of harder problems.

fata morgana

Overall it was a really fun trip with us all getting some good problems done especially the other two who were dispatching despite old or new injuries. I managed to flash a 7c+ which has been a goal for a while as well as doing loads of cool problems at loads of venues.

This is my ticklist from may til now: -

Peak district:
Mutton busting – 8a/8a+ first ascent
Recreational violence (LH) - 8a
Candyman – 8a first ascent
Hard Candy – 8a first ascent
Neil’s wall (sit start) – 7c+/8a
Mint sauce – 7c 2nd ascent
Candy Kaned – 7c 2nd ascent
Hand candy – 7c First ascent
Candy floss – 7b+ first ascent

Switzerland:
Left hand of darkness – 8a+
Right hand of darkness – 8a
Mutter tag – 8a
Rhytmo Brachial – 8a
Unnamed - 7c+ (flash)
Sneestrum – 7c+ (flash)
Unnamed roof - 7c+
Man of cow – 7c (flash)
Campus problem – 7c
Some river boulder - 7c first ascent
Back bloc – 7c
Sheep fatale – 7c
Welcome to jamrock – 7b+ (flash)

Font:
Fata morgana – 8a

keeping busy...

Have been busy and then on holiday so no updates for a while.
This is what I have been up to since May.

Dan and I developed a newish venue on peak limestone and did some sweet problems up to and including a couple of 8a’s. One of which is a link up of a couple of 7c problems via a butch move, and the other is a big move off a terrible crimp. We also did an amazing 7c called candy kaned which features sloper slapping up a vague prow as well as a bunch of other cool problems.

After this we went to beginners wall and did Neil’s wall from sitting (Dan flashed the stand up then flashed the sitter, leaving me flailing but I eventually did the sitter after a while). Next was recreational violence – polish dave’s big dyno thing. We saw some other holds on the left and climbed it. We thought it could be 8a? Who knows. Its fun!

Next we started to try the low roof across the road from beginners wall. Ru had been trying this via a savage crimpy sequence, but the dream team (Dan and myself) found some new beta which made it a bit more doable, and a bit more fun. We were close to linking it that session but had to go back for it. Finally on my 3rd session it went down with Dan doing it the session after. Its called Mutton Busting due to the sheep bones scattered at the base of the crag and is probably 8a/+?

After this we got stuck in to the highball groove to the left. After abbing it and pulling off loads of loose rock Dan dispatched and I did it a bit later with a slightly different sequence. Its called Mint Sauce and is probably about 7c – but pretty highball.

A bad pic of mutton busting.

A bad pic of rec. violenc

Neverland

Keith did some filming while we were out in Font. There were 140 people registered to compete making this the biggest world cup to date.

We headed into isolation at midday ish then sat around for ages getting psyched out by how strong everyone else was. Croxall and the Watsonator were lucky and were out early after only an hour or so. The rest of us had to wait for ages (Roddy having something like an 8 hour wait!)

I warmed up and felt strong. My skin was quite good and I felt like I could pull pretty hard (although not as hard as most of the beasts there!).

I was called and went to climb and was rubbish. I can’t put my finger on why but I was missing loads of tricks and being stupid. I never felt like I could get into a position to pull hard which is really frustrating.
On the plus side (although not really!) the others struggled a bit too. This made me feel a bit better as maybe it was a style thing rather than me just being rubbish. Only Gaz made the semis.

The final was impressive. Daniel woods is probably the strongest guy I have ever seen. His strength was amazing and really inspiring, but his balance, footwork and flexibility were all a bit behind! That didn’t bother him as he crushed his way to 3rd.

After the comp the party kicked off. It was a good laugh and cheered us all up after climbing badly! After a late night and an early start we got back to england and i went straight to bed.

CWIF

Ed told me to get this updated as he needs something to do at work… Hi Ed!

The climbing works had a nice comp the other week. It was good fun with some hard probems.

I managed to squeeze into the semi final, but only did one problem (close on 1 other) so ended up in 10th place. I was pleased to make the semis as it was good preparation for the coming internationals. I felt fit and was recovering well between attempts, but the problems were dirty hard so I couldn’t do them. Gangle was a beast and finished 6th despite claiming to be rubbish! Smitton was a beast and won, beating Earl and Wouter (the Dutch champion) in the final. Very impressive.

After the comp I ate a raw burger and didn’t get ill which was an achievement, then went to hang with Dan and the strong aussies.

goooose

This weekend was the BUSA bouldering comp (for dirty students). Me, Varian and Lily had been asked to do it, as we did ok last year. I was a bit unsure at first as last year was really busy and badly organised/set, but Sharma was lecturing afterwards so it seemed like a good plan to go.

Taz and Zippy had set the problems – with Taz being in charge of the harder ones on the comp wall. This is good as he sets good hard problems, rather than minging hard problems. A couple were hard (7b/+? – i dunno) and didn’t get done by many people. Team Sheffield won, with Lily wining the girls comp and me and Dan getting 1st and 2nd place in the males. Dan was kind enough to be the beta monkey once he had dropped a problem, so found the way on the harder problems giving me a good chance of flashing them. Luckily this worked and I flashed them all. I think a couple of them were pretty hard so I was pleased with this. Hopefully I can keep hold of this luck/form for the next couple of months as there are some big comps coming up which I am dead exited about.

After the comp we messed about on the “training” board where Dan fully burned me off and then went to the Sharma lecture. This was ok, but he repeated a lot of the stuff from king lines so was a bit tedious by the end (although I hate to say it! – he is still a hero).

I rested on Sunday and went out on Monday with Dave Mason. He is still injured but getting better and seemed happy to be out spotting and brushing but was clearly frustrated to not be climbing. The physio has said he can probably climb in 3 weeks or so. Good news.

We went to turnignstone edge as I wanted to try River of Life (goose). Unfortunately true to form it was wet but I had a few goes anyway, doing all but the crux move. I am keen to go back for this. It’s good.We moved on to Salle Goose (via Gibbon Swing – a really nice 7a or 7a+ slap). SG is a really nice line with nice holds. On the first go I got set up for the slap with feet in the wrong place and was no where near. After figuring out the bottom moves a bit better (where you put your right foot is crucial) I had a few goes at the slap. This felt hard so I decided to try and lock the move instead to see how close I could get.

Luckily I am lanky so could reach the top by standing up really high and locking rather than slapping – cool as I am bad at slaps. Did it after a few goes falling tickling the top.

Ben turned up and we went to the Secret Dyno. This is a really nice problem that only Jon and Neil have done (as far as I know). I think they gave it 7B+ which seems fair. It is like an easier version of Haute Tension at Cuvier Rampart, with the set up being harder but the end being easier. The top holds were damp but we both did it ok once we had sorted the sequence.

Dave got some photos and a video on his phone, hopefully he will work out how it works and send them to me so I can get them up here!

After this we went to Eastwood. Ben had a few goes on the traverse and then got stuck into westwood/hats for youths, coming very close to getting the slap move. I did Hats for Weasels in a few goes (felt about 7b+?) then did HFY from standing, via the crimp (like Simpson did) and tried it from sitting but couldn’t quite get established into the standing position. I think once I get into the last move I will do it, but it is really hard to get there. Involving a really deep lock and a hard cut loose move.

Anyway, enough rambling for now. am back in Leicester for a bit so won’t be getting out so much, but will be training more.

Also, Pete’s new thing at burbage looks well scary. The guy is a beast. Effort.

Tales from Wales

We decided to go to North Wales this weekend for a bit of a change. We went up on Sat so we could get in a full day on Sun.

After the usual warm ups on the roadside face (the ramp, the edge problem, leo’s dyno and a thousand eliminates) we headed round the back for John to try the roof crack. He ended up getting powered out but was dead close to it.

Went over to Jerry’s roof with Ben. After a few lame attempts I did it. I tried this 3 or 4 years ago but got shut down so it was nice to come back and find it ok. Ben was trying Mr fantastic so I had a go. We were doing all the moves ok and had a few attempts at the link but it is long and tiring so we sacked it off in order to save some beans for later.

I had 10 mins on Pool of Bethesda. It is a one move 8a+, but the hard bit of the move is holding the swing, so really it’s a half a move 8a+. This half a move is hard, but didn’t feel miles away.
Before leaving I did the right hand finish to bus stop, which matches the edge and then rocks on to the slab rightwards, rather than going into the holds on Jerry’s problem. It’s a bit harder, but probably still 7c.

I moved over to sub society and surprised myself by doing it pretty fast. It is given 8a, but I spose it suited me being a pocket, a drop knee and some crimps (which I fully crimped). Nice.

We all went up to the barrel and did the minimum, then Ben and me did the groove (hard 7b+ now a hold has broken). He did it 2nd go, I managed to flash it. Next I tried the traverse. This is really nice, but quite long and I was starting to get powered out. I flashed to the very end but I was knackered and my foot fell off into a big puddle. Had a few more goes but just got pumped after a few moves. I want to go back and do this.

We fell off a few more things (Ben was really close to love pie) and got caught a hale storm (so hid under a roof). Then we sacked it home via a food stop.

Hoping to get back to wales soon as i really enjoyed it.

Went to kudos wall on Saturday which was cool. Havn't been there for ages. Did the usual problems (bigger spalsh, press, tsunami etc.) but couldn't do low left again. Then played on a bit of a project with Dan (he was close, doing all the moves). Had fun.

Sunday was spent with Dan, Bonjoy and Nige on a project over near eastwood. We did the easy right hand version (7a maby?) and got stuck in to the arete on the left.

After doing it from a high start (off a bock) i was psyched to do it off the floor. It added one (pretty) hard move. I fired through to the end and was on the last hard move when i ripped a little 2 finger crimp off it, making it loads harder. No one could do it then. Gutted!

Had a board session on Tues. Felt pretty good but didn't do anything of note. Leo was a beast and did a hard problem (board grade 5).

Had to go to the foundry this afternoon for the varsity comp. Shef beat Hallam. I managed to not fall off and won.

I also managed to drag myself up the classic disc problem. I remember being told about this ages ago and being amazed that anyone could have done it. It looks hard! Was well chuffed to do it.

Resting tomorrow for sure.

font 5 finally

The last couple of weeks have been busy.

Had team training a couple of weeks back. Saturday at the Works and Sunday at boulder UK. Ian and Jamie had set us a mock up world cup (5 qualifiers and 4 semi-finals) which we tried 5 mins on and 5 mins off. This was hard but really good fun. They even set a problem on pockets (uuum nice!).

Friday was the last round of the climbing works league. I found it hard to get psyched and climbed pretty badly. Never mind. It was good fun tho.

Just had a session on our board. It went well. I managed to climb "throw in the dowel", my first grade 5 on the board. This is the 3rd ascent after Leo and Dan. Dead chuffed!!

I also managed to run my ipod through the washing machine the other day. However i got persuaded to head out to the plantation.

Had a potter about and managed to do Boston Mess from matched on the lowest undercut. Did Deliverance and Brad Pit again, and spotted Andy as he got really close to Brad Pit.

Stood below Carless Torque and got psyched for it again. It is amazing. It was too warm and we only had 2 mats so didn't try it.

After this i went to the climbing works. It was amazing.

Day 1)
Nightmare getting there. Arrived late afternoon after about 2 hours sleep in an F1. Felt rough but we all got so exited and ran around trying everything we saw at Bas Cuvier. Had a few attempts at La Balance. Me and Gangle got kind of shut down. Dan did it fast.

K-Unit on La Balance

Day 2)
Psyched. Blue sky again.
Had a few attempts at Karma in the raging sun. Didn’t get close at all and felt pretty rubbish. Arms were not firing. Dan did Misericorde in about 10 mins and Gangle was really close but had to throw in the towel to save skin.

Misericorde

I think it was today that we went to UBIK as well. Dan and Keith had a play in the sit start moves, then Dan said “I will have a quick go from standing” 3rd go he was standing on top! Blue sky again!
Went with Chris Schulte over to Hip Hop (8a+) which he wanted to look at. It was right in the sun and really hot but looks like a cool problem. Then went and did Sale Gosse (as did Dan) and Jet Set. Then did arabesque and should have done eclipse, but my arms had given up.Tom was knocked out by some viscous cold and couldn’t climb but he still came out and gave out beta and psyche. Good man.

Day 4)
Psyched. Blue sky again!!
Cuvier once again. Settled the score with Le Balance, and did it again without the chip (given 7c+/8a but no harder than with the chip to be honest). Went to look at Neverland, but some weird people were filming some Sinbad style film/drama. Were loads of weird men in capes with swords and a camera crew and I was told to go away!

Le Balance

Dan and Gangle did big boss. My arms were tired and i couldn't do it. Moved over to Haute Tension (in the raging sun). Gangle crushed it while me and Dan had to find a new sequence. But did it in the end. I was mega chuffed as it is very un-ned. The crux is pulling on a little crimp. Nice.

Day 5)
Psyched. Blue sky again!!!
Felt beaten, skin was thin and really couldn't warm up. Gangle suggested we have a go on Neverland as I had been babbling on about trying it since we arrived. After 20 mins not knowing what to do, we worked out a sweet sequence of knee bars and clamping. Felt really close to doing it but the key knee bar was tearing my knee up. It hurt too much to try. Was going to sack it off, but Tom suggested tying a sock round my knee over the graze to pad it out a bit.
The sweaty sock worked, and i grovelled over the top. Sweet. Keith got some footage. If its any good you might get to see it one day.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5166618132576525234" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 289px; The weather was looking good which was a bonus.

After warming up i decided to have a quick go on deliverance. First go was a rubbish ranging go. On the second go i committed to the foothold and got the jug ok. It's nice to have done this as it means i don't have to try it again!

Shaggy turned up and quickly did Boston Mess (i fell off the last move, tickling the top). Now we were warm we could get stuck in to the Joker. We were both close to campusing it (hand fully over the jug, but forgetting to hold on) but somehow couldn't comit to the foot on method.

Ryan and Katy arrived and after messing about on a few other things we got stuck into Carless Torque (while Shaggy stayed behind and did Ben's extension - effort). Ryan was crusing the bottom (crux) over an over again but messing up the top. After a big lob from the last move (which was fine) he chilled out and did it easily. This was only his second session on it!

This is one of the most inspiring things i have seen for a long time. Amazing effort.

I slowly made progress until i was getting stood up on the arete and reaching out right to the rail, but messing my feet up. Not to worry. The moves are very good and i can't wait to get on it again. I never thought i would be able to get off the ground!

(Here is Big Malc doing the deed back in 2001)

Now back to training and revising until after exams....

crimbo etc.

Have been in leicester for the past couple of weeks for christmas and all that. I am training a lot on our board and on the fingerboard and seeing improvements which is always nice.

I went on Keith's board last week. His hard problems are HARD and i got fully shut down on them. I managed to make up a nice new problem for him (which i couldn't do!). It's called "squeeze louise". He is in Swiss at the moment with a strong team. I assume he will dispatch (if the weather is good).

Back to revision for me.....

weekend etc.

Friday was the 3rd round of the Leeds wall comp. Shaggy and Sugdon were not there and team tall (Gangle and Adam) were also absent. This meant that Ben/Dave had not set anything too hard so i managed to not a fall off (and win).

One of the easier problems was the coolest thing ever! Starting standing on a ledge, you had to reach out to dangling hold on a piece of cord. You then did a gladiators style swing over to a volume with some edges on it to an easier top out. Amazing.

After that we crashed at Ben and Rach's, and in the morning it was off to Earl (via their new board which is BIG). Earl was freezing. You couldn't stand still. You had to be moving constantly or you got too cold. Ben was close to a new 7c+/8a of Dunning's but we gave in in the end.

After getting home i was keen. I had been talking about 1 armers with Dan the other day so decided try a new exercise. It is a pyramid set or assisted 1 armers. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 with 2-3 mins rest between each set, changing the assistance as you need to.

On Sunday i went up to the school with Paul and Dave to do a rings workout. This was hard work but fun. I tried to hold back a little as we were planning on heading out on Monday.

Monday:
Went to moorside with a strong team to try Superbloc (E8 7A / highball 8A). This problem is amazing.
After sorting the sequence Ry was getting past the crux but tiring. The rest of us were close to the crux move (catching a big move to a small pocket) but we ran out of steam. I am keen to get back on this as it is one of the best problems i have tried in the peak. After getting home i went on the fingerboard for a short session which went well (and turned into a long session).

Congratulations to Ed. He climbed Zoo York on Saturday. Very impressive.

fully full

I had monday off as i was pretty tired from the weekend, but managed to head out on tuesday evening (after an exam) for a night session. Andy has a new lighting set up which worked well. Famous Grouse went down from standing (had no intention of trying the sitter) which is someting i have wanted to do for a while. Stopped after this as i wanted to save some skin for Tuesday.

Tuesday:
Got a text from Dave Barrans. He was going to try 8 Ball (after crushing Full Power very fast last year). This is good as we (the Masonator and me) were planning on going on FP anyway.

Dave B was looking really smooth but not quite getting the sidepull in the right place (the crux) on the link. I am sure he will have it soon enough.

I had a few rubbish attempts, but warmed into it (it was our warm up). Dave showed me some short mans beta, which the flexi hips seemed to agree with, but it still felt hard.

Felt like i was running out of steam so decided to have a last go. Fortunatly it all came togther and felt ok (as they do...) but only after being shouted at a lot to remind me what to do! Thanks guys.

Finished off on Marks Roof (right hand finish - 7c), a nice move off a small ripple.

Probably resting tomorrow then leeds wall comp on friday, followed by some yorkshire action.

last week

Tried to have a session on the board on Tuesday but it didn't happen. We just felt rubbish. My arms felt dead and wouldn't wake up. Not a happy bunny.

Decided to chill for the rest of the week as i had a lot of work due in and I just wasn't at all motivated to train (which is very unusual for me).

Friday was the climbing works comp. Percy and Sam had made things a bit more tricky than before which nice. Keith was looking very strong (as ever) but wasn't in the comp. Dave won again and Jordan, Gaz and Tony all did well.

I was rubbish and dropped loads that i shouldn't have. I am not used to having so many days off!

Saturday was spent training at the new wall in Stockport.
Sunday was spent in Preston running, talking about important stuff and doing circuits (30 seconds on and 3o seconds of on press ups, sit ups campussing etc.). This was a really fun day, but pretty tiring.

Today was spend feeling stiff, but keen to train. We went there and met Rhys and Dan.
Dave flashed Suavito, and did Barry Sheen quickly - good effort.

We couldn't decide what to do next, but since conditions were pretty good (the wind was freezing) we thought it would be a good plan to try something sloping.

Of we went to the other end of Gardoms (which is sheltered, so wasn't totally dry) to have a look at Full Power. This is something that i have wanted to get stuck into for ages, but the few times i have pulled on, it has felt too hard.

This time we just got stuck in and worked out the moves. After getting good sequence we started going for the link. I fired through to the move into the stand up a few times on the trot, and called it a day. Didn't want to loose any more skin. Will hopefully be back on it in the week when it has totally dried out.

I wanted to train in the evening, but needed to rest the fingers. A text off Foley reminded me about lock offs. Busted out some assisted 1 armers then lock offs for the first time in about a year. Also closed the CoC no. 2 again. Feeling good at this. Will have to start trying to rep it.

Sunday was spent working followed by the fingerboard. Some of us boulderers tagged along too.

As you can see it was quite entertaining...

Katy was enjoying herself anyway!

He showed us various core exercises and stretches etc. to allow us to move better. All was going well until he spied me (i was hiding at the back, trying to blend in with the white walls), and made me demonstrate some things to the others, as apparently i am quite flexible...

Not funny.

It was a good session, but i still prefer my front lever/scorpion kick/weighted sit-up sessions.

Lucy's report on it...
http://www.thebmc.co.uk/News.aspx?id=2274

Gaz's version of events...

http://www.gazparryclimbing.blogspot.com/

Thursday evening was a campus/fitness session at the works. The others (Dave, Dan and Tony) were looking strong. Campussing went well, until i got a blister on my finger and fitness went well (apart from looking like a punter falling off easy problems).

I think i am over the lurgy almost fully now. Brilliant. Having an easy week probably did me some good.

Resting tomorrow, then out at the weekend or indoors if/when it rains.

unflappable?

Went to the Slipstones on sunday.
This is a cool crag. The rock is good (for grit) with no big crystals/pebbles. Thought it might be wet, but the wind did its job and conditions were really good.
Dan showed me around, and we did some classics (sulky little boys, lay by arete etc.), then spotted him on some hard stuff and finally did sidewinder from sitting as is got dark. Was a nice day, but not the most productive!

Foundry round 2 was yesterday. No one was feeling particularly sparky (Katy and Tony got back from the Kranj comp at 2am and Ben was suffering from it being a monday!) but there were some good problems. Tony (Fritz) and Ben looked strong but each fumbled a problem a few times. I managed to wobble my way up some problems and not fall off as many times, so i finished first, with Tony in 2nd and Ben 3rd.

http://www.cragx.com/climbing-news/index.php?id=56

Resting today, then fitness session at the works with the Masonator on Wed. Felt rubbish and could feel the beginings of a cold so stopped early. Felt pretty bad for the next few days so took it really easy - i hate doing this!
Fingers felt strong but big muscles were not happy and just acted as a wobbly weight belt.

Was going to go to Northumberland with Dan this weekend, but the forecast for Saturday was rubbish. Will go to Yorkshire tomorrow as it should be dry.

I would have loved to do the Plywood masters today. Its a really fun comp. If it was a week a go i would have done it for sure, but i didn't want to mission up there and not feel on form. Also death cough + breathing your body weight in chalk probably isn't the best idea. Dan and Ryan were climbing well (Ryan crushing Blazin 48's,and Dan getting really close until ripping a chunk from his finger). We moved across to Westworld, which we should have done. How can you get your whole hand on a jug ,time after time, but not hold it?.... However, Ludo clearly hadn't been to Jamming school so didn't clean up.
Dave Barrans (http://www.davebarrans.blogspot.com/) (fresh from placing 8th at the last round of the world cup) flashed the lot, apart from the beefy roof, which only Ludo did. I only managed to make one silly mistake which is unusual for me, and think i may have done ok overall (not seen the results yet).

Went out on limestone on Saturday with Darkhorse and Kev. Oops!

Warmed up at Rubicon, where we saw Dobbin who was sooo close to tsunami.... again. Probably both 7c+, just that one is harder than the other (especially when done static...!).

Next up was the Hulk. I always found this really hard, probably because i wasn't strong enough previously, and i tend to go when it is hot. This time it felt ok. I am really pleased to have climbed this shiny piece of history.

Now the weather has gone bad, but it looks like it could improve by the weekend.

velcro rock

Was going to go on the board yesterday, but ended up having a fingerboard session with Dave M. Didn't feel 100%, but did ok.

Had a long day at uni today, but rushed home so i could head to burbage with Dan. We wanted to try/do Darkstar - an unrepeated Welford 7c+. It is pretty high.

We arrived just as the sun was setting, and busted out the head torches. After warming up on Guplets on toast (a 7b+, also of welfords), we got stuck in. Conditions were amazing.

Dan did it quickly, and i was left falling from the crux endlessly! (i want to go back for this problem, it is really good). We packed up and went off to burbage west, where i managed Western Eyes (not so scary when you can't see the death boulder below) and Dan fell up West Side Story. We went back to Sheffield and had a short session on the board.

Dave is off to Swiss on Wednesday with a strong team. Ben Meeks and Dave Mason set the problems which were nice and basic, and really good. Smith and Sugden were looking strong (as ever) and came 1st and 2nd, while i was left floundering in 3rd. Had a really good time and will be back for the next one for sure.

Today, headed out to Rivelin (after sleeping in), to meet Gangle and Adam. It was spitting a bit, but they both dispached Ry's Master Kush (nice work). Dave and I had a few goes but never really got going before we decided to head to the works, out of the rain.

Warmed up on the comp wall, then went round the new yellow circuit. Managed most of the problems, but skin got really sore so sacked off some of the more crimpy ones. Bumped into a few people who I havn't seen for a while, which was nice.

Was a good day. Don't feel that worked but my skin is sore. Managed most of them, but it was a fight! Percy and Sam had been putting up a new yellow circuit (6c? - 7c?), so tried some of those until sore skin told us to stop.

Overall, quite a good little sesion.
